Ice Dams and Roof Damage: How to Protect Your Home This Winter

Ice dams can cause leaks, stained ceilings and damaged gutters. Learn why they form and how to prevent them.

Ice Dams and Roof Damage: How to Protect Your Home This Winter

Midwest winters bring snow, freezing temperatures and, for many homeowners, ice dams. These ridges of ice along the roof's edge can force water under shingles and into your home. Understanding them is the first step to preventing damage.

Why ice dams form

Heat escaping from the living space warms the roof, melting snow on upper sections. That water runs down to the colder eaves and refreezes, building a dam that traps more meltwater behind it.

Improve attic insulation and air sealing

Keeping warm air out of the attic is the most effective defence. Sealing gaps around light fixtures, vents and attic hatches, then adding insulation, helps keep the roof deck cold and even.

Ventilate the attic

Balanced soffit and ridge ventilation lets cold air flow beneath the roof, reducing hot spots that cause uneven melting.

Install ice and water barriers

When replacing a roof, a self-sealing ice and water membrane along the eaves and valleys adds a crucial layer of protection against leaks.

Keep gutters clear

Clean gutters before winter so meltwater can drain properly. Consider gutter guards to reduce debris build-up.

Act on warning signs

Icicles along the eaves, water stains on ceilings or damp attic insulation all suggest a problem worth inspecting quickly.
